Qualified Garden Designer in Beckenham

I'm Oliver Burgess, a qualified garden designer creating joyful, biodiverse outdoor spaces across the South East. Every garden is shaped around how you actually live, whether that means a dining area, outdoor kitchen, children's play space, water feature or wildflower bed. I work on everything from small courtyards and roof terraces to large family estates, and I'm equally at home with awkward shapes like L-shaped gardens and triangular gardens. Planting is chosen to attract wildlife, cope with our changing climate and offer colour through every season. From garden design in Bromley to projects right across London and Kent, every design feels natural, well-balanced and built to last.
Simon Dunstan
We were amazed at how Oliver took all our ideas and turned them into a fully formed design. The visuals were stunning and gave us a clear picture of what the final result would look like.
Charlie Keech
We couldn’t be happier with the garden Oliver designed for us—he translated our vision perfectly. He was knowledgeable, skilled, and we’d highly recommend him to anyone.
Stuart Spear
Oliver worked with us on a 40ft garden bedding, advising and adapting until our vision came to life. He’s fun to work with, and his experience and contacts saved us time and money.
Alan Selby
The design was brilliant and exactly what we were looking for. Professional, great to work with, and I’d use Oliver again in a heartbeat.

My Ethos for Garden Design in Beckenham and Surrounding Areas
My approach is simple: a garden should feel as good to live in as it looks. That might mean somewhere to entertain, somewhere quieter to unwind, or a space that works for the whole family. I design around how you actually use the garden, balancing creative ideas with practical detail. Materials are chosen for quality and longevity, planting for character and seasonal interest. Good design isn't only about how the garden looks today. It's about how it grows, feels and functions five or ten years on. Based in Beckenham, I offer garden design services in West Wickham and right across London and Kent, from full redesigns to smaller updates. Every layout is climate-friendly and biodiverse, and I think carefully about orientation, including east-facing gardens where morning light shapes the whole design.

My Garden Design Process

My process is built around clear communication and steady momentum. It starts with a friendly phone call to talk through your goals, lifestyle and location. If we're a good fit, I'll arrange a free site visit anywhere across London or Kent to walk the garden, take photos and start mapping out what's possible.
From there, I produce a detailed concept using 3D design software, including layout options, planting ideas and mood boards tailored to your space and budget. You'll have several rounds of feedback to refine the design until it's exactly right. Once it's signed off, I prepare the full design pack: layout drawings, planting plans and technical notes for whoever builds the garden.
If you don't already have a landscaper, I can recommend trusted teams, including Layis Landscaping, a landscaper based in Tring, and Shape Landscapes, a landscaping company in South West London. I'm equally happy working alongside your existing contractor. From first sketch to final planting, I support every stage of the project.
Garden Design FAQs
Yes. Many of our clients want a garden that feels elegant yet functional. Raised beds are a great option if you’d like space to grow herbs, vegetables, or cut flowers without taking up too much ground space. They work well in both compact city gardens and larger layouts, adding structure while remaining practical.
If space is tight, thoughtful layout is key. We design gardens that feel open and inviting, even when outdoor space is limited. This might include built-in seating, raised planting zones, and vertical elements that draw the eye upwards. It’s about finding a balance between style and utility.
We tailor each design to your style. If you prefer a more structured look, we can incorporate straight lines, geometric planting, and contemporary materials. This can help create a sense of calm and order while making the space feel larger and more refined.
Absolutely. A productive garden doesn’t have to feel messy or overgrown. We can integrate a vegetable garden as a focal point using raised beds, decorative edging, or a potager layout. It’s all about design that complements your home and lifestyle.
We consider every angle of your space. From the way you walk through the garden to how each area is revealed, we aim to create a sense of journey and openness. Planting, pathways, and focal features all work together to guide the eye and shape the experience of your garden.
