This garden in Brockley had become very overgrown, with oversized plants, brambles and weeds taking over. No one used the space, so it had gone without upkeep for years. The brief was to reclaim it and turn it into a series of connected spaces the whole family could enjoy.

This garden in Brockley had become very overgrown, with oversized plants, brambles and weeds taking over. No one ventured into the space, so it had gone without any upkeep for years. The brief was to reclaim the garden and turn it into a series of connected spaces the family could actually use, for entertaining, relaxing and growing their own vegetables.
The end of the garden needed to do the most work. The client wanted a relaxed entertaining area that could be used all year round, alongside a space to work from when they were not in the office. The aim throughout was a garden that felt considered and usable in every season, rather than a space that sat empty.
The design goals included:
Clearing the overgrown planting and reclaiming a garden that had gone unused
Creating a series of connected spaces that flow naturally from one to the next
A relaxed entertaining area at the end of the garden for use all year round
A bespoke garden room that doubles as a quiet place to work away from the office
Integrated storage to keep the space tidy and functional
A rainproof pergola so the area can be enjoyed whatever the weather
Room to grow vegetables as part of the everyday garden
OB Garden Design approached this project by clearing the neglected planting and reworking the layout into a set of connected, purposeful zones. At the end of the garden, I designed a bespoke garden room with integrated storage and a rainproof pergola, creating a sheltered spot that works for entertaining, relaxing and working alike. The result is a garden that the whole family wants to be in, used right through the year rather than left to grow wild.
