Tiered Garden Design in South London:
Steep Slope Reimagined
Client Brief and Design Approach
This steeply sloped garden in South London had become tired and unusable, with broken concrete, DIY paths, and an old, unused koi carp pond dominating the space. The clients wanted to transform it into a low-maintenance, comfortable area for entertaining and relaxing — all while working within a tight budget and with no side access for machinery.
The brief was to create a practical outdoor space that could seat up to 10 people for dining and socialising. With limited access, removing waste was not an option, so the design focused on building over the existing site wherever possible. Composite decking was chosen as the ideal material — allowing the garden to be levelled and refreshed without major groundworks or retaining walls, while concealing the old structures beneath.
The design goals included:
-
A level, low-maintenance dining and lounging area
-
Composite decking to cover existing waste and uneven ground
-
Space to comfortably seat up to 10 people
-
A solution that avoided excavation or waste removal
-
A stylish finish on a tight budget
OB Garden Design approached this project with a strong focus on practicality and smart material use. By working with the existing levels and repurposing space under the deck, the new design delivers comfort, simplicity and style without the need for major structural work.
