Family Garden Design in Thames Ditton: Riverside Living Redefined
Client Brief and Design Approach
For this riverside family garden in Thames Ditton, the client wanted a versatile outdoor space that could be enjoyed by both adults and children throughout the year. The brief was to create a garden with distinct zones for entertaining, relaxing, and family activities, all while keeping a natural, modern feel.
Set in a generous plot by the river, the garden needed to balance open green areas with practical features. The design had to include a large lawn, dedicated areas for summer BBQs and parties, and a sunny seating spot that could be used throughout the day. Towards the end of the garden, the brief included space for a new garden office, storage, and zones for play and productivity—including room for a trampoline, table tennis, and a vegetable garden.
The design goals included:
-
Defined zones for socialising, relaxing, and play
-
A spacious lawn for family activities
-
A contemporary planting scheme with texture and seasonal colour
-
A modern garden office with integrated storage
-
Space for productive planting, including veg and salad beds
OB Garden Design approached this project with a focus on flexibility and flow. I used a mix of evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses, and colourful perennials to create structure and movement across the garden. Each element was carefully considered to ensure the space would grow with the family and remain vibrant and functional throughout the seasons.
