Dulwich Garden:
Plant-rich Sanctuary

Client Brief and Design Approach

Once a stripped-back and uninspiring space, this garden offered little more than a narrow patio, a patch of lawn and a few evergreen shrubs. The brief was to transform it into a plant-rich sanctuary full of colour, texture and movement — a garden that would not only look beautiful all year round but also support wildlife and biodiversity.

The new design centred on generous, flowing planting schemes. Layers of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses were introduced to bring structure and seasonality, while new blossom trees added height, softness and spring interest. A sculptural water feature forms a focal point, reflecting light and creating gentle sound to attract birds and pollinators.

A key part of the brief was to create a space for the clients to enjoy outdoor living. A sunny terrace with space for dining and relaxing is now framed by immersive planting that blurs the boundaries and brings the garden to life.

The design goals included:

  • Rich, layered planting to enhance colour and texture

  • A wildlife-friendly layout to support birds, bees and pollinators

  • A calming water feature to anchor the space

  • Year-round interest through seasonal shrubs, grasses and perennials

  • A functional seating area for outdoor dining and relaxing

OB Garden Design approached this garden with a focus on softness, movement and ecology, transforming a once-bare space into a vibrant haven for people and wildlife alike.
