Garden Design in Waltham Cross
Client Brief and Design Approach
A modern garden in Waltham Cross designed to complement a new build home. Scandinavian-inspired planting, gravel paths, natural boulders, and multi-stem trees create a calm, structured space that looks great year-round from inside and out.
Modern Scandinavian Garden for a New Build in Waltham Cross
Once a bare, lawned space with little to offer beyond a blank backdrop, this garden sat behind a modern new build home in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. Surrounded by striking burnt larch cladding, large bifold doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, the garden felt underwhelming and lacked cohesion. The brief was to create a garden that would complement the sleek architecture with a calm, Scandinavian feel — a space rich in texture and planting that evolves with the seasons.
The new design draws on Nordic themes, with a naturalistic planting palette and strong structural elements. Silver Birches with their elegant white bark provide height and winter interest. Multi-stemmed trees like Amelanchier and Maples soften the space and frame key views. Planting includes a mix of flowering perennials, tall ornamental grasses, and shade-tolerant ferns. Gravel beds with dwarf pines and low-maintenance, drought-tolerant species add year-round interest and contrast. Large natural stone boulders are positioned to add weight and presence to the layout.
A key part of the brief was to ensure the garden looked beautiful when viewed from inside the home. With its wide glass elevations, the planting was designed to be enjoyed from all angles, with layered textures and seasonal highlights creating an immersive and ever-changing view.
The design goals included:
A naturalistic, Scandinavian-inspired planting scheme
Structural trees and boulders to anchor the layout
A mix of sun- and shade-loving plants for seasonal interest
Drought-tolerant planting to reduce maintenance
A garden that complements the home’s architecture and materials
